the paper's leadstory is concerned with a man-hunt for a prisoner who escaped from the Erie County Correctional Center several weeks ago. He is armed and extremely dangerous (having shot three State Troopers earlier in the week).
The paper included the picture on the right. I'm not sure I would be smiling if the police were ransacking my trunk with a shotgun.

E'r to keep'th evil at bay
succinctly at night do'th we pray
O!the Improbable! give'th us yet another day
imploring the Reaper grant'th us a stay-
thieves of time, n'er wanting to pay
secret doubts upon our pillows at night we lay
Alas! T'is but a felon's game we play
Self-wardens all, come what may
Lo! fickle be'th hope's bright ray
bane to smiles so falsely gay

The escape is her son-in-law. They had a wager on how long it takes the cops to catch him. Loser has to do the dishes for a week.
(This makes more sense than it seems. Who would hide in the trunk of a stranger's car?)
Lo! That I could'st post a poem so new
but alas! Host's dawdling in the dew
of morn's bright day nearly through
sitting all day at his paper on the loo?
